The 6 Core Layers of an Effective Visual Brief
A great AI image prompt is not a magical list of buzzwords; it is a structured, photographic creative brief. By organizing your prompt into predictable layers—subject, action, environment, composition, lighting, and artistic finish—you communicate direct visual parameters that generative diffusion models can systematically interpret.
Start with the subject
Name the focal subject and what it is doing before adding visual style. “An adult ceramicist shaping a bowl” provides more direction than “beautiful masterpiece.” Include distinguishing visible traits, not a long biography that cannot appear in the frame.
Build outward in layers
Add a setting, then light, framing and finish. A useful order is subject → action → environment → lighting → composition → medium. This is an editing aid, not a guaranteed instruction hierarchy; different models interpret wording differently.
Make an intentional example
Try: “Documentary photograph of a ceramicist shaping a bowl, wooden workshop shelves behind her, soft window light from the left, waist-up eye-level framing, natural muted colors.” Each phrase contributes a visible choice.
Edit rather than accumulate
Remove synonyms and conflicting directions. “Close-up” and “full room establishing shot” compete for framing. Generate a small set of variations, compare against your brief, and change one variable at a time. Save the wording and settings that produced the most useful result.
The 6 Core Layers Explained
01. The Focal Subject
Name who or what occupies the center of interest. Be concrete: "an adult ceramicist with silver-streaked hair" provides vastly clearer direction than "a beautiful person."
02. Action & Micro-Posture
Describe what the subject is actively doing in the frame: "shaping wet clay on a spinning wheel," "holding a folded roadmap," or "gazing out a rain-streaked window."
03. Environment & Spatial Context
Set the stage: an artisan studio with timber shelves, a rain-drenched neon alleyway, or an alpine lake basin. The setting gives the subject purpose and grounds reflections.
04. Camera Optics & Composition
Dictate the visual perspective: camera angle (eye-level, low angle, top-down flat lay) and focal length (35mm environmental, 50mm natural, 85mm portrait telephoto).
05. Motivated Lighting Scheme
Establish where the light originates: soft morning window light from the left, dramatic Rembrandt chiaroscuro, warm golden hour rim light, or practical neon reflections.
06. Material Finish & Color Grading
Specify tangible textures and palette: tactile linen weave, wet asphalt, pearlescent glass, muted earthy colors, or fine 35mm analog film grain.
Weak vs. Improved Prompt Comparisons
Example 1: Artisan Portrait
A beautiful woman making pottery, hyperrealistic, 8k, masterpiece, award winning, photorealistic, trending on artstation.
Why it fails: Piles on generic praise tokens without giving the model any concrete direction regarding lighting, focal length, setting, or camera angle. Likely to produce a generic, waxy stock photo.
Documentary portrait of a female ceramicist shaping a terracotta bowl on a pottery wheel, damp clay on hands, rustic wooden workshop shelves in background, soft north-facing window light from the left, eye-level 50mm lens look, muted natural colors, authentic candid moment.
Why it matters: Names the exact craft, working posture, window light source, 50mm lens perspective, and realistic background clutter, resulting in grounded human realism.
Example 2: Commercial Product Shot
A luxury perfume bottle on a table, best quality, ultra detailed, studio lighting, highly realistic.
Why it fails: Fails to describe container materials, cap finish, background sweep, or reflection behavior, leading to messy reflections and generic plastic packaging.
Commercial product photograph of a heavy-base frosted glass perfume bottle with an amber wooden cap, resting on a white acrylic plinth, single fresh jasmine blossom beside it, large overhead diffused softbox creating clean white gradient highlights, 100mm macro lens, sharp product focus, pale neutral studio background.
Why it matters: Controls reflections through a large diffused softbox, names specific materials (frosted glass, amber wood), and uses a 100mm macro lens for commercial clarity.
Example 3: Cinematic Film Still
Cyberpunk city at night with a person, cinematic, octane render, unreal engine 5, 4k.
Why it fails: Mixes 3D video game engine buzzwords with film terms, producing noisy, oversaturated polygons with no clear narrative focal point.
Film still of an urban courier sheltering under a transit station awning at night, rain streaking beyond the glass shelter, ruby neon storefront signage reflected in wet asphalt, low-angle medium shot, 35mm anamorphic cinema lens, sharp subject against receding avenue, restrained teal shadows, fine 35mm film grain, 2.39:1.
Why it matters: Frames the moment in 2.39:1 widescreen, uses practical neon reflections on wet asphalt, and establishes optical depth with a 35mm anamorphic lens.
Reusable Prompt Architecture
Use this standardized formula to structure any prompt before generating:
Practical Example: Editorial portrait of an adult cellist beside an airy rehearsal window paused mid-song, music stands in soft-focus background, warm golden hour rim light from the side, eye-level 85mm portrait lens, cream linen shirt texture and subtle film grain, 4:5.
